What is MIG welding?
MIG welding is a process of joining pieces of metal together in a strong, long-lasting bond. Blacksmiths have been performing simple welding by heating pieces of metal and beating them with a hammer for centuries, but since the late 1940s, MIG welding has become one of the most popular modern alternatives.
MIG welding works by using an electric current to create a short circuit, known as an electrical arc. In simple terms, with MIG welding the operator uses a MIG ‘gun’, as the welding torch is often known. The gun feeds out an electrode wire which creates an electrical arc with the item being welded. This generates heat which melts the electrode wire. This wire melts into the joint that it being made. Once the heat is removed, the molten metal cools down and solidifies. As it does so, it fuses with the two pieces of metal being joined.
What can MIG welding be used for?
MIG welding is a very versatile welding technique. It can be used for a wide variety of metals, including copper, nickel, aluminium, different types of steel such as stainless or carbon steel, and a range of other alloys. It is useful for welding thin and medium thickness metals, typically between about 0.6mm and about 14mm, however this will vary depending on the type of metal being welded. For thinner and thicker metals, other joining options can be used.
Why is MIG welding useful for your project?
There are several advantages to MIG welding. The most obvious is that it is a quick method of welding. This means that it can be used to speed up machining times compared to some other methods of welding. Even better, the speed of MIG welding does not require sacrificing neatness, as MIG welding carried out by a skilled technician is a tidy, precise method which leaves a smooth weld and requires minimal work after to tidy up. It can also be used for welding in all positions, whether vertical, horizontal or flat. This makes MIG welding truly versatile.
